Tragic Death: FG Mourns Arise News Anchor Murdered in Abuja

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has described the tragic death of Arise News anchor, Ms. Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, as a grievous loss to her family, colleagues, and the Nigerian media fraternity.

In a letter of condolence addressed to the Chairman of Arise News, Chief Nduka Obaigbena, Idris expressed deep sorrow over the “shocking and untimely death” of the 29-year-old journalist, describing her as “a vibrant and dedicated news anchor, consummate lawyer, and a model of professionalism whose work resonated with audiences across Nigeria and beyond.”

The Minister called the incident “heinous,” noting that it cut short the promising career of a young journalist in her prime. He assured that a swift investigation would be conducted to unravel the circumstances surrounding her death.

Idris extended his “heartfelt sympathy to the parents, siblings, colleagues, and all who knew and loved the late news anchor” and prayed for the fortitude to bear the loss.

According to reports, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, fondly called Sommie, passed away in the early hours of Monday, September 29, 2025, following an armed robbery at her residence in Katampe, Abuja. The case is currently under investigation by the Nigeria Police.

Her death has sparked an outpouring of grief across the Nigerian media community, highlighting the tragic loss of a talented and inspiring journalist.
