The Borno State Police Command has confirmed the deaths of four children following the accidental detonation of an improvised explosive device (IED) in Banki, a border community in Bama Local Government Area.
Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Keneth Daso, said the incident occurred on Friday at about 12:40 p.m. behind the Banki Motor Park in Wajari Ward.
According to preliminary findings, a 12-year-old boy, Mustapha Tijja, was playing with four friends inside a makeshift structure when the explosive went off. The device was reportedly picked up from a nearby bush.
Mustapha sustained serious injuries and was immediately taken to the FHI 360 Clinic, where he is currently receiving medical care.
The four children who lost their lives were identified as Awana Mustapha, 15; Malum Modu, 14; and two 12-year-olds, Lawan Ibrahim and Modu Abacha.
Police personnel have since secured the scene, restored normalcy, and launched a full investigation into the tragic incident. Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Abdulmajid, urged residents to steer clear of unfamiliar objects and promptly report suspicious items to security agencies.
He reassured the public of the command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and preventing similar incidents.
