Tinubu Performing Worse Than Jonathan on Insecurity – Prof Jibrin Ibrahim

A Senior Fellow at the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD), Prof. Jibrin Ibrahim, has said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is performing worse on insecurity than former President Goodluck Jonathan, whom Tinubu had sharply criticised during the 2014 schoolchildren abduction crisis.

Prof. Ibrahim made the remarks on Friday while speaking on Prime Time, a programme on Arise Television, monitored by DAILY POST.

He recalled that many Nigerians believed insecurity would significantly reduce when the late President Muhammadu Buhari, a former Army General, assumed office. However, he said those hopes were dashed.

“Buhari came and proved totally incapable of ending insecurity. Tinubu criticised Jonathan for school abductions and has now found himself at the helm of affairs, performing worse than Jonathan did,” Ibrahim said.

According to him, although the past year has been particularly difficult for Nigerians, insecurity has remained a persistent problem for over a decade, driven largely by the state’s failure to fulfil its constitutional responsibility of protecting lives and property.

“What marks this year is the glaring inability, or some would say unwillingness, of the Nigerian state to carry out its constitutional responsibility of providing security and welfare for Nigerians,” he noted.

Prof. Ibrahim pointed out that since 2009, insecurity has continued to worsen, with increasing numbers of armed civilians attacking communities, travellers, and even security forces.

“The fact that people who have no legal right to arms are able to procure them and use them with impunity means the problem will only grow,” he warned.

He added that successive administrations had raised public expectations but failed to demonstrate the political will, capacity, and technical know-how required to address the crisis.

“It’s a very sad tale. The narrative is extremely disturbing, and as Nigerians, we are yet to see a government that has the will, determination, and competence to tackle rising insecurity,” he said.

Prof. Ibrahim also disclosed that his committee is currently working with the National Orientation Agency to produce digital explainers and translations of the new law in major Nigerian languages, aimed at improving public understanding and engagement.
