President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday held a closed-door meeting with Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, fueling fresh speculation over the governor’s political future.
Governor Yusuf arrived at the Villa at about 4:10 p.m., dressed in a white agbada and a red cap, and proceeded straight to the President’s office. Details of the meeting were not immediately disclosed.
The high-level engagement comes amid sustained rumours that the Kano governor is planning to defect from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Sources familiar with the ongoing talks, however, say negotiations have reportedly hit a snag over the demand for an automatic ticket for Yusuf on the APC platform ahead of the 2027 general election.
The defection speculation has dominated political discussions in Kano for weeks and has reportedly deepened cracks between Yusuf’s supporters and loyalists of his political mentor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the leader of the NNPP.
Although no official statement has been issued by either party, Yusuf’s meeting with President Tinubu is widely viewed as a significant development in the unfolding political realignment in Kano State.
