President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Monday held a closed-door meeting with Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara at the State House, Abuja, amid growing political tension in the state.
Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, also met privately with the President earlier in the day.
Fubara arrived at the Presidential Villa around 5:01 p.m. and was received by the Presidential Protocol Liaison Officer before heading into the closed session, which lasted until about 5:45 p.m. No official briefing was issued on the agenda or outcome of the discussions.
Governor Nwifuru’s separate engagement with the President also remained confidential, though sources believe it focused on regional infrastructure and security issues affecting the South-East.
The timing of Governor Fubara’s visit has raised eyebrows, coming just days after 17 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly—led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule and loyal to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike—defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Their defection has significantly reshaped the political landscape in the state assembly, leaving only three lawmakers aligned with the PDP and supportive of Governor Fubara.
