Tinubu: Fuel Subsidy Removal Powering Key Projects in Abia

President Bola Tinubu has said Abia State and other parts of Nigeria are reaping significant benefits from the removal of fuel subsidy.

The President, represented by Minister of Works Dave Umahi during a one-day visit to Abia on Friday, noted that the policy has enabled state governments to execute major development projects.

Tinubu’s subsidy removal, announced in his May 29, 2023 inauguration speech with the now-famous phrase “Subsidy is gone,” had drawn criticism from Nigerians who argued that there were no adequate cushioning measures.

However, speaking at the commissioning of several projects — including the remodeled Dr. Michael Okpara Auditorium and completed road works — Umahi insisted the impact is becoming visible.

“The removal of the fuel subsidy is gaining momentum for projects, and we are beginning to see the benefits here in Abia State. The same progress is being experienced in other states across Nigeria. I am committed to working with your governor to ensure that Abia State fully reclaims its potential,” Umahi quoted Tinubu as saying.
