Tinubu Defends Electoral Act, Rejects One-Party Claims at APC Convention

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has defended the controversial Electoral Act 2026, describing opposition criticisms as a “disservice” to Nigerians, while reaffirming his administration’s commitment to democratic principles and credible elections.

Speaking at the 4th Elective National Convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Tinubu said the legislation underwent extensive legislative scrutiny, including public hearings, before being passed by the National Assembly in line with constitutional provisions.

Addressing party faithful from across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, the President stressed that while criticism is welcome in a democracy, persistent attacks on the law by opposition groups were misplaced.

“The processes leading to the amendment passed through the crucible of legislative scrutiny,” Tinubu said. “The Act reflects our collective quest to strengthen our electoral system and consolidate democratic rule.”

The convention was attended by key political figures, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, alongside 31 state governors and party leaders.

No Agenda for One-Party State

Tinubu dismissed claims that the APC is working to establish a one-party state, insisting that democracy thrives on competition and a credible opposition.

“We do not seek a one-party state. Democracy thrives on vibrant and healthy competition,” he said, adding that constructive opposition is essential for refining policies and improving governance.

He urged party members to prioritise unity and discipline, warning that internal divisions, rather than electoral defeat, often weaken political organisations.

Economic Reforms Showing Results

On governance, Tinubu highlighted progress under his Renewed Hope Agenda, noting improvements in key economic indicators despite global challenges.

According to him, inflation has declined steadily to 14.45 percent, while food prices are easing and business confidence is rebounding. He also pointed to sustained economic expansion, growth in GDP, and increased investor confidence, including renewed interest in the oil and gas sector and an oversubscribed Eurobond issuance.

“Our stock market is booming, and listed companies are recording strong profits,” the President said.

He added that infrastructure development—including road construction, and the modernisation of ports and airports—remains a priority, alongside ongoing fiscal and tax reforms.

Power Sector and Youth Inclusion

Acknowledging persistent challenges in the power sector, Tinubu disclosed plans to address them through the establishment of a Grid Asset Management Company (GAMCO), aimed at boosting electricity supply.

The President also called for greater youth and women participation in politics and governance, urging the party to create more opportunities for inclusion.

“You are not only the future of Nigeria; you are our hope,” he said, addressing young Nigerians.

Party Leadership and Internal Reforms

Tinubu commended the convention planning committee led by Aminu Bello Masari for organising the event and charged newly elected party officials to lead with integrity and vision.

He also noted that the influx of new members from other political parties reflects growing public confidence in the APC.

In a related development, APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda pledged to improve women’s representation in politics, describing current levels as “unacceptable.” The party is considering proposals for increased female participation, including elective positions across geopolitical zones.

Looking Ahead

Tinubu described the convention as a defining moment in Nigeria’s democratic journey, calling on party members to remain committed to the APC’s founding ideals of justice, development, and inclusive governance.

“We are moving from survival mode to stability and steadily towards an era of prosperity,” he said.
