President Bola Tinubu will on Monday convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to formally consider the appointment of Olatunji Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police.
Multiple senior sources within the Presidency and the police hierarchy confirmed that the council meeting has been scheduled in line with statutory requirements.
The meeting is being held in compliance with the provisions of the Police Act 2020, which mandates the Nigeria Police Council to consider the President’s nominee before the name is transmitted to the Senate for confirmation.
Last Tuesday, in a statement announcing the resignation of former Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, the Presidency disclosed that the council would be convened to deliberate on Disu’s appointment. The President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, had stated that following the council’s consideration, Disu’s name would be forwarded to the Senate for confirmation.
The Nigeria Police Council is chaired by the President and comprises the 36 state governors, the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, and the Inspector-General of Police.
Disu, 59, has been serving in an acting capacity since his appointment on Wednesday, following Egbetokun’s exit from office.
During his decoration ceremony, Tinubu charged him with strengthening the Nigeria Police Force at what he described as a critical moment in the country’s development. The President urged him to lead with integrity, prioritise the welfare of officers, and restore public confidence in the force.
A native of Lagos Island, Disu enlisted in the Nigeria Police Force on May 18, 1992. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in English Education from Lagos State University, as well as Master’s degrees in Public Administration and in Criminology, Security and Legal Psychology.
If confirmed by the Senate, Disu will become the 23rd indigenous Inspector-General of Police.
