“They Thought I Was Lying” — Chelle Defends Super Eagles After Painful Shootout Loss to Morocco

Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, has dismissed claims that he exaggerated his team’s readiness ahead of their semifinal clash with Morocco, insisting his players were mentally prepared despite the heartbreaking outcome.

Nigeria suffered a 4–2 defeat to the host nation via penalty shootout after a tense contest that ended level in regulation time.

Reacting after the match, Chelle admitted the loss was difficult to accept but praised his players for their mentality, discipline, and work rate throughout the encounter.

The Franco-Malian coach noted that many doubted his pre-match comments about the team’s preparedness, but maintained that his assessment was honest and accurate.

“Morocco really earned this win, but our mindset was positive. We battled for every ball,” Chelle said.

“Before this game, I spoke at the press conference and said something. People tried to say it was a trick or that I wasn’t telling the truth. I know my team. It wasn’t an easy game, but the players showed a strong mindset and gave a good response.”

Nigeria initially took the advantage during the penalty shootout, raising hopes of a place in the final. However, missed spot-kicks by Samuel Chukwueze and Bruno Onyeamachi proved costly, extending the Super Eagles’ penalty woes at the tournament.

Morocco capitalised on the misses to book their place in the final, while Nigeria now turn their attention to the third-place playoff.

The Super Eagles will face the Pharaohs of Egypt on Saturday as they look to end their campaign on a positive note.
