Former Jigawa State Governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to urgently convene a meeting with all past Nigerian leaders to deliberate on the recent threat allegedly issued by United States President Donald Trump against Nigeria.
Lamido, who made the appeal in a statement posted on his official Facebook page on Sunday, described Trump’s remarks as “very ominous,” warning that the potential consequences could be catastrophic if not addressed with urgency and diplomacy.
“The threat of war on Nigeria from President Trump of the United States of America, under whatever guise, is very ominous. The consequences of such action cannot be imagined,” the former governor said.
Lamido, who also served as Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, urged Nigerians to close ranks and defend the nation’s sovereignty regardless of ethnic, political, or religious differences.
“It is now time for all Nigerians of all creeds to unite around our sovereignty. President Tinubu, on his part, must swallow his pride and invite all our past leaders for a closed-door meeting to fully discuss and find a way around this dangerous development,” he stated.
The PDP chieftain emphasized that Nigeria’s stability should take precedence over political rivalry, appealing to former Presidents and Heads of State to work hand in hand with the Tinubu administration to prevent any escalation of diplomatic tension.
“Our former Presidents and Heads of State are eminently positioned to engage the USA and President Trump in an all-out quiet diplomacy, outside the media realm, to resolve whatever concerns the U.S. may have,” Lamido added.
He concluded by stressing that Nigeria does not have the luxury of time and must act swiftly and collectively to safeguard its unity, peace, and sovereignty.
