Nigeria, three-time African champions, have been handed a tough draw for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, placed in Group C alongside Tunisia, Uganda, and Tanzania. The tournament, scheduled to run from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026, will see the Super Eagles aim for a record-extending 21st appearance in the continental competition.
In the group stages, Nigeria will face Tunisia, who previously eliminated them in the round of 16 at the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon. Tunisia, the 2024 AFCON champions, are one of the tournament’s most successful teams, having claimed the title once in 2024 on home soil. Uganda, making their eighth AFCON appearance, and Tanzania, appearing for only the third time, will round out the group.
Nigeria remains the most successful team in the group with three AFCON titles (1980, 1994, 2013) and 16 medals overall. The Super Eagles’ last AFCON campaign saw them lose 2-1 in the 2023 final to host nation Ivory Coast.
Hosts Morocco, in Group A, will face Mali, Zambia, and Comoros. Seven-time champions Egypt are placed in Group B with South Africa, Angola, and Zimbabwe. Group D features Senegal, DR Congo, Benin, and Botswana, while Group E consists of Algeria, Burkina Faso, Equatorial Guinea, and Sudan. Defending champions Ivory Coast, along with Cameroon, Gabon, and Mozambique, will compete in Group F.
CAF and the Moroccan Football Federation have confirmed that six cities and nine stadiums will host the 2025 AFCON. Matches will be played across Rabat, Casablanca, Agadir, Marrakech, Fes, and Tangier. Rabat will be home to four stadiums, including the 69,500-capacity Complexe Sportif Prince Moulay Abdellah, and Tangier’s Grand Stade, which holds 75,000 spectators.
The draw sets the stage for what promises to be an exciting tournament as the continent’s best teams vie for glory in Morocco.
