Sowore Meets Jonathan, Says Ex-President Will Urgently Discuss Nnamdi Kanu’s Detention with Tinubu

Nnamdi Kanu tortured for 8 days by Kenya’s special police, his lawyer alleges

Former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, on Friday met with former President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja to discuss the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Sowore revealed that Jonathan acknowledged the urgent need to address Kanu’s prolonged incarceration and promised to engage President Bola Tinubu on the matter.

In a post shared on X, Sowore wrote:
“Earlier today in Abuja, I met with former President @GEJonathan to discuss the continued incarceration of Mazi @NnamdiKanu. President Jonathan agreed that there is an urgent and compelling need to address this matter decisively and justly.”

He added that Jonathan’s assurance to meet Tinubu was “particularly assuring,” describing it as a step toward peace, fairness, and national healing.

Sowore noted that Jonathan has now joined a growing list of prominent Nigerians — including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN), and Senator Shehu Sani — who have publicly called for Kanu’s release.

According to Sowore, “Mazi Nnamdi Kanu remains in detention today because he took up the just cause of confronting the long-standing issue of marginalization in Nigeria. Like other ethnic and regional activists whose politically motivated cases have been withdrawn or dismissed, Nnamdi Kanu should also be released without further delay.”
