The Anambra State House of Assembly has debunked claims that Governor Chukwuma Soludo influenced the suspension of Hon. Abuchi Udemezue, the member representing Ayamelum Constituency.
In a statement on Thursday, Chairman of the House Committee on Media and Publicity, Hon. Ejike Okechukwu, dismissed the allegations as “false, baseless and mischievous,” stressing that the disciplinary action was strictly an internal legislative matter.
The clarification followed criticisms by some Labour Party lawmakers from Anambra North Senatorial Zone, who alleged executive interference in Udemezue’s suspension.
According to Okechukwu, the Assembly would ordinarily have ignored the claims but decided to set the record straight to avoid misleading the public.
He explained that Udemezue’s suspension stemmed from his “unparliamentary and offensive conduct,” after he described fellow lawmakers as “mad men” in a social media post and failed to offer a satisfactory defence when summoned.
“The decision to discipline Hon. Udemezue was entirely an internal legislative affair and not at the behest of the Executive. Every member is bound by the constitution and the standing orders of the House. No one is above discipline,” the statement read.
