Nigeria’s hopes of securing a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup intercontinental playoffs have suffered a major setback as several key Super Eagles players have been ruled out of the crucial CAF playoff fixtures.
The team, led by head coach Eric Chelle, faces tough selection decisions following a string of injuries, suspensions, and fitness concerns that have sidelined some of the nation’s top talents.
Among the affected players are Terem Moffi, Felix Agu, Ola Aina, Cyriel Dessers, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, and Semi Ajayi, all of whom have been integral to Nigeria’s recent campaigns.
Terem Moffi, 26, picked up a hamstring injury last month after returning from international duty. His club coach, Franck Haise of OGC Nice, confirmed that the forward would be sidelined for several weeks.
Felix Agu, Werder Bremen’s versatile defender, has been ruled out after undergoing surgery for a syndesmosis ligament injury sustained in a Bundesliga clash against St. Pauli.
Similarly, Ola Aina remains unavailable following a long-term injury sustained during international duty. Everton boss Sean Dyche described his situation as a “longer-term” concern.
Cyriel Dessers is also a doubt, with the Panathinaikos striker battling an ankle injury that has already kept him out of action for six consecutive games.
Midfielder Fisayo Dele-Bashiru will miss a month after suffering a Grade I thigh injury during Lazio’s fiery Derby della Capitale against AS Roma on September 21.
Meanwhile, Semi Ajayi will be unavailable for the first leg due to accumulated yellow cards but could return if Nigeria advances past Gabon.
The CAF has confirmed that the African playoffs will take place in Rabat, Morocco, from November 13 to 16. Winners of the two semifinals will progress to the intercontinental playoffs — a decisive step toward qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
