Shekarau Defends Possible Abba Yusuf Defection, Cites Kwankwaso’s Past Switch

Former Kano State governor, Ibrahim Shekarau, has said Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf should not be accused of betrayal if he decides to defect from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

Shekarau made the assertion on Tuesday during an interview with DCL Hausa, amid rising tension within the NNPP and the Kwankwasiyya political movement over reports that Yusuf may be considering a move to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Reacting to comments by NNPP’s 2023 presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, who reportedly said Governor Yusuf should relinquish his mandate before defecting, Shekarau described the position as contradictory and historically inaccurate.

“I listened to my brother, Kwankwaso’s remarks. To me, Kwankwaso has either forgotten what happened in the past or he thinks people have forgotten,” Shekarau said.

The former governor recalled that Kwankwaso himself defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC while serving as Kano State governor, without vacating his office.

“When he was in the PDP, he left the governorship seat and moved to the APC. Why didn’t he drop the seat for the PDP? The same way he took the PDP seat to the APC is likely the same way Abba will take the NNPP seat to the APC,” Shekarau added.

Shekarau’s remarks come as internal disagreements continue to deepen within the NNPP, with the future political direction of Governor Yusuf becoming a major point of contention ahead of the 2027 political cycle.
