Former federal lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani, has described the multi-billion-naira donations raised for First Lady Remi Tinubu as “eye service” by individuals seeking favor from those in power.
Sani made the remark in a post on his official Facebook page while reacting to the over ₦20 billion reportedly raised by Mrs. Tinubu towards the completion of the long-abandoned National Library project in Abuja.
The First Lady had announced on Tuesday that she had so far secured more than ₦20 billion for the library project, which has been stalled for nearly four decades.
Commending her effort, Sani recalled that former First Lady Turai Yar’adua was not as fortunate when she sought donations for her International Cancer Center project. According to him, many wealthy individuals pledged billions during her campaign but failed to redeem their pledges following the death of her husband, late President Umaru Musa Yar’adua.
“First Lady Senator Remi is lucky to raise ₦20 billion for the National Library that has been abandoned for close to 40 years. That is commendable and well appreciated. Her Excellency Hajiya Turai Yar’adua was not that lucky; many people who pledged to donate billions to her International Cancer Center refused to redeem their pledge after Yar’adua died,” Sani wrote.
He further warned that most donations of this nature are usually insincere, urging the First Lady to ensure that contributors follow through with actual payments.
“Most donations are ‘eye service’ for people in power. Our First Lady should make sure they ‘send alert as quick as possible’. Happy Birthday to the Distinguished First Lady,” he added.
