Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has said former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, is paying the price for what he described as “misgovernance and irresponsible leadership” during his time in office.
Sani made the remarks while appearing on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday night, where he reacted to El-Rufai’s recent comments that friends, family members and former colleagues he had supported in the past had abandoned him.
The former senator said El-Rufai’s current detention should be viewed against his administration’s record, particularly its alleged disregard for the rule of law and treatment of political opponents.
Sani, who said he had personally experienced the pains of imprisonment, noted that being out of circulation could naturally lead to people losing contact with a person.
“I think he has been in detention for about 200 days, and for someone like me who has been in prison for four years, I don’t think anyone can lecture me on detention and the pains of imprisonment. But it’s natural that when you are out of circulation, you are bound to lose friends,” Sani said.
He added, “El-Rufai is paying the price for his misgovernance and irresponsibility when he was in public office.”
According to Sani, public office should be regarded as a temporary opportunity, urging those in positions of authority to always remember that their tenure will eventually come to an end.
“He was in office; he had no respect for the rule of law; he didn’t obey court orders; he arrested many people and sent them to jail. Today, he has found himself in the very place where he took so many people,” he said.
Sani further alleged that Kaduna State witnessed what he described as “misgovernance, irresponsible leadership and the use of statecraft to attack and jail opponents” during El-Rufai’s tenure from 2015 to 2023.
El-Rufai is currently facing corruption-related allegations arising from his tenure as governor and has been held in custody following court proceedings.
