Senator Ipalibo Banigo, representing Rivers West Senatorial District, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Banigo announced her resignation from the PDP during plenary at the Senate on Tuesday, March 10.
In a letter addressed to the Senate and read on the floor by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, the lawmaker said her decision was driven by the need to align politically with the leadership of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
According to her, the move is also aimed at strengthening efforts to advance development in Rivers State.
Banigo further explained that her decision to join the APC followed extensive consultations with her constituents and political associates.
The development marks a significant shift in the political landscape of Rivers State, as the former Deputy Governor of the state formally aligns with the ruling party at the federal level.
