Rivers PDP Unbothered by Rumoured Fubara Defection to APC

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State says it is unshaken by speculations that Governor Siminalayi Fubara may dump the party for the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking on the matter, PDP State Chairman, Robinson Ewor, stressed that whatever political path the governor chooses remains his personal decision.

“As an individual, Governor Fubara has every legitimate right to take any political interest he deems fit, provided such a decision serves the overall interest of the Rivers people who elected him,” Ewor stated.

His comment comes amid growing speculation that part of the peace deal signed during the six-month emergency rule imposed on Rivers, which lasted from March 18 to September 18, included a clause for Fubara’s defection to the APC.

Ewor, however, said he was not aware of such an arrangement, nor had the governor informed the party of any plan to leave.

The rumours gained momentum after Fubara was spotted on Monday in the company of the chairman of the APC Governors’ Forum and Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, as they visited President Bola Tinubu.

Observers also noted that during his statewide broadcast on September 18, when he officially resumed duties after the emergency rule, Fubara failed to acknowledge the PDP’s role in resisting the alleged unconstitutional takeover.

It would be recalled that at least 11 PDP governors had dragged the APC-led federal government to court, demanding a reversal of the emergency declaration, while several prominent Nigerians also described the move as unlawful.
