Reps Member Adepoju Slams APC Over Electoral Act Standoff, Warns of Threat to Democracy

The lawmaker representing Ibarapa Central and Ibarapa North Federal Constituency of Oyo State in the House of Representatives, Anthony Adepoju, has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of acting against the will of Nigerians following the controversy surrounding the Electoral Act Amendment Bill.

Adepoju made the remarks on Tuesday during an interview on Arise Television, monitored by DAILY POST, while reacting to the National Assembly’s decision to retain the manual transmission of election results.

Proceedings in the House of Representatives earlier turned rowdy as lawmakers clashed over a motion seeking to rescind the passage of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill. The debate reportedly triggered sharp disagreements between members of the APC and opposition lawmakers over the mode of transmitting election results ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking on the development, Adepoju, who serves as Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Federal Character Commission, expressed concern that the decision could undermine public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic process.

“We want Nigerians to have trust in our democracy and elect the leaders of their choice,” he said.

He described the events on the floor of the House as partisan and inconsistent with democratic ideals, alleging that the actions taken were not reflective of the broader wishes of Nigerians.

According to him, any move that could cast doubt on the credibility, transparency, and fairness of elections would be a setback for the country’s democratic progress since 1999.

Adepoju warned that conducting elections perceived as lacking transparency could damage Nigeria’s democratic reputation and erode citizens’ confidence in the electoral system.
