Real Madrid have parted ways with head coach Xabi Alonso following their 3–2 defeat to Barcelona in the Supercopa final on Sunday night.
The decision was taken less than 24 hours after the dramatic loss, which saw their fierce rivals lift the trophy at Madrid’s expense. Alonso further fuelled the backlash after the game when he described the Supercopa as “the least important” competition Real Madrid would contest this season.
The former Spain international had already been under intense scrutiny, with the club enduring a difficult campaign in both LaLiga and the UEFA Champions League. Inconsistent performances and a growing gap behind their domestic rivals had increased pressure on the club’s hierarchy to act.
Madrid’s decision to terminate Alonso’s contract comes at a critical moment in the season, with the club due to face Albacete in the Round of 16 of the Copa del Rey in just two days’ time.
An interim manager is expected to be announced shortly as the club looks to stabilise the squad and rescue their season.
