Activist Mahdi Shehu has called for the resignation of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), citing allegations of bias and misconduct.
Shehu made the call in a post on X on Monday, where he accused the electoral chief of actions he said were damaging public confidence in the commission.
According to him, the situation surrounding INEC’s leadership is serious and requires urgent attention to prevent further erosion of trust in the electoral system.
“Either BAT and Amupitan do not understand the gravity of the situation surrounding the INEC chairman’s current scandal, or they are testing the patience of Nigerians,” Shehu stated.
He also criticised the silence of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on growing calls for the chairman’s removal, describing it as concerning.
“BAT has decided to remain silent and mute on the genuine calls for the INEC chairman to resign in the overriding interest of democracy,” he said.
Shehu further alleged that the INEC chairman had been linked to controversial actions involving social media activity, including disputes over ownership of certain accounts and past political expressions. He argued that explanations offered by the electoral chief, including claims of impersonation, were unconvincing.
The activist warned that failure to address the issue could have political consequences for both the INEC leadership and the presidency.
“If Tinubu refuses to sack the INEC chairman, he will lose more than INEC, which may not be his wish,” he added.
Shehu concluded that continued public dissatisfaction could further undermine confidence in the electoral body, stressing that accountability and integrity remain essential to democratic governance.
