President Bola Tinubu on Thursday in Abuja officially sworn in Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan, SAN, as the sixth substantive Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). At the State House ceremony, Tinubu urged the new chairman to serve with unwavering integrity and dedication to strengthening Nigeria’s democratic process.
Acknowledging the progress Nigeria has made over 25 years of democracy, Tinubu emphasized that the upcoming November 8, 2025, Anambra governorship election will be a critical test for Amupitan’s leadership.
The President called for free, fair, and transparent elections, underscoring the importance of protecting electoral integrity at all stages from voter registration to vote counting. Prof. Amupitan, confirmed by the Senate and sworn in during the National Economic Council meeting, promised to defend the Constitution and ensure credible elections nationwide.
“This is a challenging, yet rewarding journey,” Tinubu said, “and I trust you will protect the integrity of our electoral process and strengthen INEC’s institutional capacity.” Amupitan, succeeding Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, outlined plans to reform the electoral system, rebuild public trust, and engage all stakeholders to deliver credible elections for Nigeria’s future.
