Abuja — The presidency is reportedly grappling with a difficult decision on the choice of running mate for President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections, insiders within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) have revealed.
Sources told the Sunday Tribune that while there are no public disagreements between President Tinubu and Vice-President Kashim Shettima, the president’s camp decided over a year ago that he would not seek re-election alongside Shettima. The reasons remain opaque, with political strategy and other considerations believed to be at play.
Despite this, Shettima has maintained his position and support base, leaving the Tinubu camp concerned about succession planning. “If Shettima is retained in 2027, it might be difficult to position another candidate as his successor in 2031,” a source said.
Religious balance continues to weigh heavily on decision-making. Analysts suggest that the 2023 election outcome, where protest votes propelled Labour Party candidate Peter Obi, demonstrated the potential impact of ignoring religious considerations. The United States has also reportedly highlighted the need for religious inclusivity in Nigeria’s top political offices during recent diplomatic engagements.
While some APC insiders frame the debate around the controversial Muslim-Muslim ticket, others insist that for electoral success, the president must choose a Northern running mate. Former Speaker of the House, Yakubu Dogara, a Christian from Bauchi State, is said to be under consideration, but concerns remain over his minority status in the state and its potential impact on vote mobilization.
President Tinubu is also reportedly considering other options, including retaining a Northern Muslim or replacing Shettima with the Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, a respected professional across the North. “The Kanuris are united around the vice-president, and so far, no clear fault has been found against him,” a source said.
Party insiders admit that Shettima’s camp is aware of internal maneuvers against him, creating tension within APC ranks. While the party has consolidated support from 30 governors, leadership continues to exercise caution ahead of the primaries, according to sources.
The running mate decision, insiders say, remains one of the most complex issues for APC as it prepares for the 2027 election.
