KANO — Tension has gripped the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) following the disconnection of its electricity supply by the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO), a move that has already claimed the lives of patients on critical life-support machines.
The hospital’s management, in an urgent appeal to KEDCO, called for immediate reconnection of power to prevent further loss of lives.
In a statement signed by the Head of Information Unit, Hauwa Inuwa Dutse, AKTH described the situation as tragic, confirming that some critically ill patients died after the sudden blackout.
“The hospital pays its electricity bills regularly from Internally Generated Revenue and also expends part of such funds to purchase diesel for on-site power generation to complement supply from KEDCO,” the statement read.
The management, however, pleaded with the distribution company to show support for its healthcare services by restoring electricity while the hospital takes steps to clear the outstanding bills.
Efforts to reach KEDCO’s spokesperson, Bala Sani, for a response were unsuccessful, as he did not answer calls placed to him.
