Nigeria’s electricity supply may experience noticeable improvement in the coming days, as Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, says ongoing reforms in the sector are beginning to deliver results.

Adelabu made this known on Thursday, March 26, 2026, during the first-quarter meeting of the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) held in Lagos. Details of the meeting were shared by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) on its official platform.

The minister noted that under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the power sector has recorded measurable progress, including what he described as the highest electricity generation levels in the country’s history.

“We have also recorded the highest generation levels and improvements across other key indices in the last three years. Our reforms are yielding results, even though they take time to fully materialise,” Adelabu said.

He further explained that recent repairs on previously damaged gas pipelines are expected to significantly boost electricity generation. According to him, gas supply to thermal power plants is gradually increasing, a development that could ease current power shortages.

“I believe we are on a positive trajectory. The current challenges will soon ease, and within the next two weeks, we expect a significant improvement as gas supply to power plants increases,” he added.

Adelabu also urged stakeholders across the electricity value chain to take greater responsibility and deepen collaboration to sustain progress in the sector.

“We must take ownership of the power sector. This is our country, and we must not be discouraged, as someone has to do the job,” he said.

Meanwhile, NERC Chairman, Musiliu Oseni, commended the minister for maintaining consistent engagement with stakeholders, while Commissioner for Legal, Licensing and Compliance, Dafe Akpeneye, acknowledged his role in driving ongoing reforms.

The Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) comprises the entire power value chain, including generation companies (GenCos), transmission infrastructure, and distribution companies (DisCos) responsible for delivering electricity to consumers.

The quarterly NESI meeting provides a platform for stakeholders to assess sector performance, address persistent challenges, and align strategies aimed at improving electricity supply across the country.
