The youth wing of the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide, has re-elected Mazi Okwu Nnabuike as its National President in a fresh round of elections held on Monday in Enugu. Alongside Okwu, a new set of National Executive Council (NEC) members were also elected, marking a significant shift in leadership for the group.
In a statement released by Dr. Barr. Maduabuchi Anthony, Chairman of the Election Committee, the re-election of Okwu was confirmed, along with the appointment of other NEC members who will serve in various capacities across the country.
During his acceptance speech, Okwu emphasized the council’s commitment to the economic and political emancipation of the Igbo nation. He expressed particular concern over the continued incarceration of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), and called for renewed efforts toward his release. Okwu criticized Igbo leaders for failing to make the issue of Kanu’s release a priority during President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent visit to Enugu.
“The Igbo nation deserves a future of economic growth and political stability,” Okwu remarked. “Our demand for the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu remains unwavering, and we will continue to resist attempts to hijack Ohanaeze for selfish political interests.”
Having served a successful four-year term previously, Okwu’s re-election signals a continued focus on the collective interests of the Igbo people, as he pledged to work diligently for the advancement of the region.
