Police Gun Down Notorious Benue Assassin Wanted for Killing Hunters’ Commander and Wife

The Benue State Police Command has confirmed the death of a wanted armed robber and assassin identified as Saater from Wannune, Tarka Local Government Area. The suspect, who had long been on the police wanted list, was allegedly behind multiple murders, including the killing of the Hunters’ Commander, Mr. Aondoakaa Yayol, and his wife, Mrs. Kashimana Yayol.

According to the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Udeme Edet, Saater was implicated in the assassination of Mr. Yayol on June 20, 2025, and the earlier murder of his wife on February 11, 2023, both in Wannune. Following the crimes, the suspect went into hiding.

However, intelligence reports later revealed that Saater had secretly returned to Makurdi with plans to launch fresh attacks. Acting swiftly on the information, detectives were deployed to intercept him along George Akume Way, Makurdi, on October 18, 2025.

The police spokesman said the suspect opened fire upon sighting the operatives, sparking a gun battle. He was eventually subdued and arrested but sustained gunshot injuries during the exchange. Saater was rushed to the Benue State University Teaching Hospital, where he was confirmed dead.

Recovered items from the scene include one AK-47 rifle, a locally made short gun, several rounds of live 7.62mm ammunition, cartridges, and seven stolen SIM cards.

The police commended residents for providing useful intelligence and reiterated their commitment to ridding Benue State of violent crime.
