PDP State Congresses Will Strengthen Party Structures — BoT Chair Ohuabunwa

The Chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mao Ohuabunwa, has expressed confidence that the party’s forthcoming state congresses will reinforce its structures and advance internal reforms across the country.

Ohuabunwa, a political ally of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, said the congresses scheduled for this weekend would help deepen internal democracy while strengthening the party’s nationwide organisational framework.

According to him, the exercises go beyond routine administrative processes and are central to efforts aimed at rebuilding the PDP’s legitimacy and inclusiveness.

“We are optimistic that the state congresses scheduled to take place this weekend will further consolidate this process and strengthen our party structures across the federation,” he said.

The BoT chairman also revealed that preparations were ongoing for the party’s National Convention slated for March 29 and 30. He noted that the gathering would provide an opportunity for the PDP to reposition itself and reaffirm its commitment to democratic values and national service.

“In the same spirit, preparations are well underway for our National Convention scheduled for the 29th and 30th of March, which will provide an opportunity for the party to further reposition itself and reaffirm its commitment to democratic principles, unity, and national service,” Ohuabunwa added.

He also acknowledged recent rulings by the Court of Appeal (Nigeria), which affirmed the legality of the party’s National Caretaker Committee led by Abdulrahman Mohammed.

According to him, the judgments have helped restore clarity and stability within the party.

“These judicial pronouncements have provided much-needed clarity and stability within the party. As a law-abiding political organisation, we respect the decisions of the courts and will continue to conduct our affairs in accordance with the rule of law and the provisions of our party constitution,” he said.

Ohuabunwa further stressed the importance of expanding the party’s membership base through its ongoing electronic registration initiative. He explained that the programme is designed to modernise the PDP’s membership system, improve transparency, and establish a reliable nationwide database.

He urged state and zonal chairmen, alongside other party leaders, to intensify efforts in mobilising members across the country to participate in the e-registration exercise.

“A strong and properly documented membership is fundamental to building a more organised, responsive, and formidable party as we continue to reposition the PDP for greater national service,” he stated.

The BoT chairman also called on party leaders and members to handle internal discussions with maturity and unity, noting that the PDP has historically overcome internal challenges.

“Our party has faced challenges before, yet history has repeatedly shown that the PDP possesses the resilience, depth, and national spread required to overcome difficulties and emerge stronger,” he said.

He added that party elders must continue to provide guidance, promote unity, and safeguard the long-term interests of both the party and Nigerians.

Ohuabunwa concluded by urging members to embrace reconciliation and work collectively toward strengthening the PDP ahead of future political engagements.
