The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has criticised Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara over his decision to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the move as “self-inflicted” and a threat to Nigeria’s democratic stability.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, the PDP said the governor’s defection contributes to what it called an alarming slide toward a one-party structure in the country.
According to the party, Fubara must take responsibility for the political decisions that led him to this point instead of blaming the PDP or any of its leaders.
“Everyone who has followed the developments leading to this defection will recall that the governor willingly travelled the path that brought him here,” the statement read.
The PDP added that despite the intense political turbulence in Rivers State, Fubara had enjoyed strong backing from the party, civil society organisations and Nigerians during the crisis.
It cautioned the governor against aligning himself with individuals it accused of steering him towards the APC, warning that such alliances undermine the democratic process.
The opposition party further argued that the situation in Rivers State exposes the fragility of Nigeria’s democratic institutions and the rising influence of powerful actors allegedly using federal might to suppress rivals.
According to the PDP, recent political events point to a shrinking democratic space and reflect deliberate efforts by the APC to entrench a one-party state.
The party called on citizens, democratic institutions and the international community to stay alert as the country faces what it described as a defining moment for Nigeria’s democracy.
