The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has suffered yet another major blow, as Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah and his Bayelsa counterpart, Douye Diri, have both exited the party in a dramatic 48-hour span.
Mbah officially dumped the PDP on Tuesday, followed by Diri’s resignation on Wednesday, further depleting the opposition’s strength nationwide. With their exit, the PDP now governs only eight states, while the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) dominates with 24.
The latest defections follow earlier moves by Akwa Ibom Governor Umo Eno and Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, who both crossed over to the APC earlier this year, citing the deepening leadership crisis within the PDP.
Until this week, Enugu and Bayelsa were considered PDP fortresses — both remaining loyal to the party for over 26 years.
As of Wednesday, October 15, the PDP’s remaining governors are:
- Adamawa: Ahmadu Fintiri (North-East)
- Bauchi: Bala Mohammed (North-East)
- Plateau: Caleb Mutfwang (North-Central)
- Taraba: Agbu Kefas (North-Central)
- Zamfara: Dauda Lawal (North-West)
- Oyo: Seyi Makinde (South-West)
- Rivers: Siminalayi Fubara (South-South)
- Osun: Ademola Adeleke (South-West)
Insiders say the crisis may not be over yet, as rumours swirl that Taraba’s Governor Agbu Kefas may also be on his way out of the opposition party — a move that could further weaken PDP’s already shrinking base.
