The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has dismissed claims of internal division, insisting that there is no faction within the party despite the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) refusal to recognise its newly elected national leadership.
INEC had declined to acknowledge the Kabiru Tanimu Turaki-led National Working Committee (NWC) elected at the party’s National Convention held on November 15 and 16, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State.
In a letter dated December 22, 2025, and signed by its Secretary, Dr Rose Oriaran-Anthony, INEC said it could not upload the list of elected officers on its website due to existing court judgments and ongoing litigation surrounding the PDP’s leadership. The commission maintained that recognising any set of officers while the matter is before the courts would be improper.
Reacting to the development, PDP National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, said the party had already appealed the judgments cited by INEC and filed applications for a stay of execution.
In a statement, Ememobong reaffirmed the party’s position, insisting that the PDP remains united both in law and in fact.
“The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party reiterates that there is no faction in the PDP,” the statement read. “This clarification has become necessary following INEC’s letter explaining its inability to recognise and upload the data of our legitimately elected leadership due to Federal High Court judgments.”
He added that the judgments in question have been appealed and that the Court of Appeal would soon hear and determine the matters.
Ememobong stressed that all legitimate organs and administrative structures of the party are firmly under the control of the Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN-led leadership, urging stakeholders and the public to disregard any suggestion of factionalisation within the opposition party.
