The National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Debo Ologunagba, says Nigerians are eagerly waiting to see the party put its house in order ahead of its forthcoming national convention.
Speaking with journalists on Wednesday, Ologunagba revealed that the high level of public interest in the party’s national elective convention—scheduled for November 15 and 16—reflects Nigerians’ faith in the PDP as a stabilizing force for democracy.
“Nigerians are eager to know what the PDP is doing to reorganize itself because they believe our vibrancy is essential to the survival of democracy,” he said.
He described the upcoming convention as “critical to Nigeria’s democratic sustenance,” adding that it has sparked excitement and hope across the nation.
Recalling the party’s achievements during its 16 years in power, Ologunagba noted that the PDP era marked a time of growth and stability.
“Under the PDP, our national debts were cleared, inflation was contained, GDP grew at double digits, and human capital development received major attention. By 2015, when the PDP left office, Nigeria’s economy was valued at over $600 billion—the largest in Africa—and was the top destination for foreign investment,” he stated.
He further disclosed that members have already keyed into the 15 broad-based sub-committees formed to ensure an inclusive and successful convention.
Addressing rumours that one of the PDP governors might defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ologunagba dismissed the claims, insisting that “the PDP is bigger than any individual,” and that such speculations will not affect the convention.
On the recent developments in Edo State, the PDP spokesman confirmed that the party successfully held its state congress on September 27.
According to him, the exercise was conducted by a duly constituted committee, with an appeal panel set up to address any concerns. He described any parallel congress as “a public show staged to please their paymasters.”
