An old video of Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, allegedly warning former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, against visiting the state without prior notice has resurfaced online, triggering widespread reactions.

The 58-second clip, recorded on July 18, 2025, during a political event in Uromi, Esan North-East Local Government Area, captures the governor issuing what many have described as a stern warning.

In the video, Okpebholo said: “The man wey say he no get shishi, I am sending a direct message to him, there is a new sheriff in town. He cannot come to Edo State without telling me because his security will not be guaranteed.

“Whatever happens to him in Edo State, he will take it. I am serious about this.”

The footage began trending on Tuesday following an alleged assassination attempt on Obi and other leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the state.

According to reports, the incident occurred at the residence of former Edo State Governor and current ADC chairman in the state, Chief John Odigie Oyegun. Viral videos recorded after the attack showed bullet-riddled vehicles in Obi’s convoy, with shattered windscreens and visible damage to parts of the motorcade.

While no official casualty figures have been confirmed, the incident has sparked outrage across social media, with many users linking the resurfaced video to the attack and calling for heightened security for the former Anambra State governor.

An X user, @Victorfelix047, drew attention to the timeline of events, noting that the governor’s warning was issued on July 19, 2025, and the alleged attack occurred on February 24, 2026. The user cautioned that Obi’s safety must be guaranteed, urging political supporters to ensure his protection.

As of press time, neither Governor Okpebholo nor the Edo State Government had issued an official statement addressing the allegations or the attack.

Security agencies are yet to release a formal report on the incident.
