ABUJA — The Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday began hearing a suit filed by the Osun State Government against the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Accountant-General of the Federation (AGF) over alleged plans to divert local government allocations.
Presided over by Justice Emeka Nwite, the case drew appearances from legal teams representing all parties.
At the core of the dispute is the disbursement of statutory allocations to Osun’s local governments. The state government accused the CBN and AGF of attempting to reroute funds into private accounts allegedly managed by individuals posing as government officials.
Osun argued that such a move would amount to a grave violation of public finance laws and the Nigerian Constitution, warning it would erode transparency and accountability in public fund management.
The government further cautioned that the alleged plan could sabotage ongoing proceedings before the Supreme Court, which is currently reviewing issues tied to local government administration in the state.
The case is the latest twist in a prolonged political and legal tussle between the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun and the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC), stemming from conflicting court judgments on the validity of the October 2022 local government elections.
Justice Nwite has yet to deliver a ruling as proceedings continue.
