Former Liverpool defender Steve Nicol has cast doubt on the Reds’ status as favourites in their UEFA Champions League showdown with Galatasaray, warning that Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen could prove decisive.
Galatasaray head into the second leg at Anfield with a slender 1–0 advantage, secured in the first encounter at RAMS Park. Although Osimhen did not get on the scoresheet in that match, his presence caused constant problems for Liverpool’s defence. The forward even had a goal ruled out for offside after what appeared to be a clinical finish.
Speaking to ESPN FC, Nicol expressed surprise at the continued perception of Liverpool as clear favourites, especially in light of their recent form.
“Liverpool have just capitulated against what is currently the worst team in the Premier League,” Nicol said. “And they are 1–0 down to Galatasaray, who have a player like Osimhen upfront, capable of winning any match single-handedly with a moment of magic and brilliance.”
The former defender added that he struggles to understand the confidence surrounding Liverpool’s chances given what he described as underwhelming recent performances.
Osimhen has been in outstanding form in this season’s Champions League campaign, recording seven goals and three assists in nine appearances for the Turkish side. The prolific striker also found the net when Galatasaray defeated Liverpool earlier in the competition, underlining his importance to the team.
As the decisive return leg approaches, all eyes will be on Osimhen to see if he can once again deliver on the big stage and guide Galatasaray toward a historic progression in Europe’s elite club tournament.
