Orji Kalu Blasts Obasanjo: “He Lied, He Told Me About His Third Term Ambition”

It’s my turn to be Senate President – Orji Kalu

The lawmaker representing Abia North Senatorial District, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, has accused former President Olusegun Obasanjo of lying about not seeking a third term in office.

Speaking on Politics Today on Channels Television on Wednesday, Kalu insisted that Obasanjo once personally informed him of his intention to extend his tenure beyond 2007.

“What Obasanjo said in Ghana, that he never wanted a third term, was a lie,” Kalu said. “He called me to the Villa and told me he wanted a third term, and I told him no. That’s why he started having issues with me. We stopped him with the help of former US President Bush.”

The accusation comes after Obasanjo, while speaking at the 2025 Goodluck Jonathan Foundation Annual Democracy Dialogue in Accra, Ghana, denied ever pursuing a third term. The former president maintained that his focus was on achieving debt relief for Nigeria, which he described as a far more difficult task than seeking tenure extension.
