Opposition Heavyweights Converge in Abuja as ADC Crisis Sparks 2027 Alliance Talks

Key opposition figures, including Atiku Abubakar, Seyi Makinde, Peter Obi, and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, on Wednesday held a high-level meeting in Abuja amid escalating tensions surrounding the crisis within the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The meeting came on the heels of protests by ADC members at the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), where demonstrators opposed the commission’s decision to derecognise factions within the party’s leadership.

The closed-door talks, widely viewed as part of ongoing opposition realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, were held at the Apo residence of former Senate President, David Mark, who currently serves as ADC National Chairman.

Also in attendance were prominent political figures including Rauf Aregbesola, Rotimi Amaechi, Abubakar Malami, and Aminu Tambuwal.

Governor Makinde, who led members of a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was accompanied by several party stakeholders, including Tanimu Turaki, Taofeek Arapaja, Adolphus Wabara, Babangida Aliyu, Jerry Gana, and Ini Ememobong.

Speaking with journalists after the meeting, Makinde described the gathering as a “solidarity visit” to ADC leadership, underscoring the need to protect Nigeria’s democratic space.

“We have seen developments in the political space, including court actions and today’s protest. We are committed to ensuring a clean and credible democratic environment in our country,” he said.

Although details of the deliberations were not made public, sources indicated that discussions focused on strengthening opposition collaboration and forming a united front to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 elections.

There are also strong indications that consultations are ongoing on the possibility of adopting a unified political platform to bolster the opposition’s chances at the polls.
