Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga has issued a stern rebuttal to U.S. Senator Ted Cruz of Texas, warning him against spreading what he described as “malicious, contrived lies” about religious persecution in Nigeria.
Onanuga’s response followed Cruz’s post on X, where the American lawmaker accused Nigerian officials of “ignoring and even facilitating” the mass killings of Christians by Islamist jihadists. Cruz also revealed plans to push his Nigeria Religious Freedom Accountability Act, which he said would sanction officials complicit in such attacks.
Reacting sharply, Onanuga insisted Nigeria is not facing a religious war. “Senator, stop these malicious, contrived lies against my country. We do not have a religious war in my country,” he wrote.
He stressed that Boko Haram and bandits in the north target all groups, not Christians alone: “They attack farmers, soldiers, and even worshippers in mosques. Christians are not targeted. We have religious harmony in our country.”
