The Oluwo of Iwoland, Oba Abdulrosheed Adewale Akanbi, has cautioned that escalating hostilities involving Iran, Israel and the United States could worsen global instability and deepen economic hardship across many nations.
In a statement personally signed on Monday, the monarch also appealed to Iran’s newly appointed Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, to prioritise peace and diplomatic engagement as tensions continue to rise in the Middle East.
Oba Akanbi congratulated Khamenei on his emergence as Iran’s leader at a critical moment for the international community, stressing that the decisions taken by the new Supreme Leader could significantly shape the future of global peace and stability.
“Your administrative prowess is a factor to the world’s peace or otherwise,” the traditional ruler stated, noting the fragile state of international relations in the region.
The monarch also reflected on recent developments following the death of Iran’s former Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, describing the incident as one that had further heightened tensions.
“The world is groaning in pain. The Middle East is bleeding profusely. The pain of the gruesome assassination of the immediate past Supreme Leader of Iran cannot be forgotten in haste,” he said.
Oba Akanbi warned that the continuing conflicts were already affecting global economic conditions, particularly through rising fuel prices and increasing costs of living, which he said were putting additional pressure on vulnerable populations.
“The economy is grounded already. The struggling classes are finding it harder to eat. The price of fuel has skyrocketed and is becoming unavoidable to the already suffering people,” he added.
The Oluwo urged the Iranian leadership to embrace dialogue and reconciliation as a pathway to easing tensions and preventing further hardship for civilians.
“Embracing dialogue is not cowardice. Those who embrace peace are the true winners. If Mojtaba Khamenei says yes to peace today, the world will be peaceful,” he said.
