‎Artswax Communications, NTN Reawaken Tafawa Balewa’s Legacy Through ‘The Golden Voice of Africa’ Stage Play

‎Lagos, Nigeria — Artswax Communications in collaboration with the National Troupe of Nigeria, presented the play “Tafawa Balewa: The Golden Voice of Africa” on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, at Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos.

‎The event brought together students, educators, cultural enthusiasts, and creative industry stakeholders to celebrate Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary through the lens of theatre, storytelling, and patriotism. Among the dignitaries present were Mr. Yemi Olatunji, CEO of JM Misa Nigeria, and Reverend Mother Esther Ajayi, Founder of the Love of Christ Generation Church.

‎Written by Ola Awakna, the Director-General of the Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC), the play chronicles the life and times of Nigeria’s first Prime Minister, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, capturing his leadership ideals, humility, and unrelenting commitment to national unity. The production, staged as part of the Tales of Legend series, seeks to rekindle cultural awareness, promote moral values, and inspire younger generations through storytelling rooted in Nigeria’s heritage.

‎Speaking during the event, the NTDC boss, emphasized the transformative power of the arts in national development. According to him, “Tales of Legend and the Golden Voice of Africa reflects a deeper mission to harness storytelling and performance art as tools for public enlightenment and moral education. Theatre, when creatively executed, can shape perspectives, inspire values, and reconnect the younger generation to the heritage that defines Nigeria’s identity.”

‎Awakan further noted that Nigeria possesses an abundance of untold stories capable of commanding global recognition if creatively articulated through art and media. The DG charged Artswax Communications’ not to relent in its commitment to bridging culture, education, and creativity as part of its long-term vision to advance youth empowerment, civic education, and cultural tourism.

‎The event received an overwhelming response from attendees who described the play as “a masterpiece that inspires reflection and unity.” Educators and cultural commentators commended the creative direction and production quality, noting that the message of hope and resilience embodied in the play could reignite patriotism among Nigeria’s youth.

‎The initiative also aligns with Artwax Communications’ broader mission to use creative expression as a vehicle for social transformation. Beyond the stage, the script of “Tafawa Balewa: The Golden Voice of Africa” is being adapted into a published book to make the story more accessible. Copies will be distributed to schools and public libraries nationwide as part of an educational outreach campaign promoting cultural literacy and national values.

‎The staging of the play coincides with Awakan’s recent appointment as Director-General of the Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC) by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on September 2, 2025, a recognition of his long-standing contributions to communication, creative enterprise, and cultural advocacy. Under his leadership, both NTDC and Artwax Communications are expected to work synergistically to promote tourism through storytelling, heritage preservation, and youth-focused initiatives.
