The apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the completion of the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, a major infrastructure project long awaited by residents of the Southeast.
Scheduled for reopening on March 31, 2026, the restored 107-kilometer dual carriageway ends decades of public outcry over the hazardous condition of the route, which had posed significant risks to travelers for over 24 years.
In a statement released Wednesday, the factional Deputy President-General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, and National Spokesperson, Chief Chineyeze Ohia, highlighted the project as a transformative development for the region.
“This milestone under President Tinubu’s administration represents a decisive shift from past neglect. The reopening has been met with uncontainable enthusiasm and joy by Ndigbo,” the statement read.
Ohanaeze noted that the expressway is not only a vital transportation artery but also a legacy project that could influence the political outlook of Southeast residents ahead of the 2027 elections. The organization also urged the federal government to release additional funds for the swift completion of other critical road projects in the region, including the Markudi-Nsukka-Nightmile-Enugu Expressway and the Calabar-Abakaliki-Benue-Abuja Super Highway.
“We commend President Tinubu and the Minister of Works, Engr. David Nweze Umahi, for this remarkable achievement and look forward to continued infrastructural progress that will enhance connectivity and development in the Southeast,” the statement concluded.
The reopening of the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway is being hailed as a symbol of hope, growth, and revitalization for the region.
