The Ogun State Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM) has cautioned principals, vice principals, and teachers in public secondary schools to desist from collecting unauthorised fees from students.
TESCOM Chairman, Biodun Sanyaolu, issued the warning on Monday during a television programme in Abeokuta, emphasizing that anyone caught engaging in such misconduct would face severe disciplinary action.
This comes after the state government indefinitely suspended the principals of Ilugun High School, Elega — Mrs. Olukoga Adeyemi Alaba (Junior) and Mrs. Ladipo Olabisi Temitope (Senior) — following the collection of illegal fees, which triggered a student protest and the tragic death of a student last Tuesday.
Sanyaolu reaffirmed the commitment of the Prince Dapo Abiodun-led administration to its free education policy, stressing that no learner in public primary or secondary schools should be compelled to pay any form of levy.
He noted that the government’s education reform agenda prioritizes access to quality and affordable education for all, warning that any action undermining this goal will not be tolerated.
The TESCOM chairman also encouraged teachers and school staff to use the Commission’s whistleblower platform to report unethical conduct within schools, assuring that TESCOM remains dedicated to transparency and accountability in the education sector.
Speaking on preparations for the implementation of the new national curriculum introduced by the Federal Government, Sanyaolu said TESCOM, the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, and other relevant agencies are working together to ensure a seamless rollout.
He further disclosed that TESCOM has taken proactive measures to achieve equitable teacher distribution across public secondary schools, adding that the newly recruited Ogun TEACh interns would enhance teaching efficiency and learning outcomes.
Sanyaolu commended school administrators, Parents Teachers Associations (PTAs), and Old Students’ Associations for their continued collaboration with the government and urged them to sustain their collective efforts in maintaining discipline among students.
