Ogun Secures Court of Appeal Division Approval

ABEOKUTA — Governor Dapo Abiodun has announced that Ogun State has received formal approval to establish its own division of the Court of Appeal, a development he described as a milestone achievement in strengthening the state’s judicial system.

The governor made the disclosure on Monday during a special church service at the Cathedral of St. Peter, Ake, Abeokuta, marking the beginning of the 2025/2026 legal year.

Abiodun assured that his administration would continue to provide the necessary support to the judiciary to ensure equitable, timely, and efficient justice delivery.

“This very auspicious occasion presents me with the pleasure and opportunity to proudly announce that we have finally received the formal approval for the establishment of the Ogun State Division of the Federal Court of Appeal,” he said.

He added that the recent appointment of new judges underscored his government’s commitment to strengthening the judicial process and ensuring that residents of the state enjoy the “dividends of justice.”

In her response, the Chief Judge of Ogun State, Justice Mosunmola Dipeolu, hailed the approval as the fulfillment of a long-awaited dream. She revealed that over 85 percent of Ogun-related appeals had previously been handled in Ibadan, stressing that the new division would ease the burden on both litigants and legal practitioners.

“When I became Chief Judge, one of my prayers was that Ogun State should have its own Court of Appeal. Our lawyers and people had to go to Ibadan for cases. With this approval, that burden is lifted, and Ibadan division will also be decongested,” Dipeolu said.

She further disclosed that Governor Abiodun had pledged to immediately commence the construction of the court building to bring the development to life.

Earlier in his sermon, Rt. Rev’d Babatunde Ogunbanwo, Anglican Bishop of Ijebu-Southwest Diocese, described the judiciary as the “most powerful arm of government,” urging judicial officers to remain humble, fair, and uncompromising in the dispensation of justice.
