The Ogun State Police Command has arrested one suspect in connection with the death of popular singer Adesina Afeez, widely known as Destiny Boy, and has transferred the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Homicide Section, for detailed investigation.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Babaseyi Oluseyi, confirmed that investigations had commenced into the circumstances surrounding the death of the 22-year-old artiste.

“The Ogun State Police Command has since commenced investigations into the death of Adesina Afeez, aged 22 years, popularly known as Destiny Boy. The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Homicide Section, for detailed investigation. One suspect is currently in custody while investigations are ongoing,” the statement read.

News of Destiny Boy’s death broke on Sunday after distressing videos showing his body being conveyed to a mortuary circulated widely on social media, triggering grief among fans and sparking speculation over the cause of his death. In one of the viral clips, the late singer was seen lying in the back of a vehicle with cotton wool placed in his nostrils and ears.

Amid the growing speculation, an unidentified associate of the singer released a separate video in which he claimed that Destiny Boy had been battling a private health challenge before his death.

“God, I want to do this video before people start saying rubbish about Destiny Boy’s cause of death. We all came to this life to write our own history. May God rest his soul. Destiny was nursing a health issue in his body before he died. We tried for him, but he didn’t make it,” the man said.

Born Afeez Adeshina, Destiny Boy ventured into music at a young age and rose to prominence with his unique Fuji-infused sound. He began his career at T2 Boys Studios in Agege, where he worked as a backup dancer for Fuji icon Pasuma.

He gained widespread attention in 2019 after releasing a Fuji-style cover of Davido’s hit song If, which went viral on social media. He later released covers of songs by Tekno, 2Baba, 9ice and Small Doctor, further cementing his place in the street-pop and Fuji crossover scene.

Among his original songs are Lamba, One Transaction, Gbese, Billion Dollar, Mio Gbonkankan and Lowkey.

Destiny Boy is survived by his partner, Iremide, with whom he welcomed his first child in November 2024.

The police said further updates would be made available as investigations continue.
