Oba of Benin Warns Tinubu, Edo Governor: Don’t Let ‘Market Women Politics’ Derail Governance

The Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, has cautioned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, against allowing what he described as “market women politics” to distract them from their core responsibilities to Nigerians and the people of Edo State.

In a statement released by the Benin Traditional Council (BTC) on Tuesday in Benin City, the monarch expressed concern over the growing politicization of markets in the state. The statement, signed by top palace chiefs including Chief Norense Ozigbo-Esere, Chief Osaro Idah, Chief Okunoghae Edomwandagbon, Chief Edionwe Oliha, Chief Ada Igbinovia, and BTC Secretary Frank Irabor, followed the controversial inauguration of Pastor Josephine Ivbaguezejele as Iyeki (market leader) by Mrs. Folashade Tinubu-Ojo, daughter of President Tinubu, at the Edo State Government House on October 2, 2025.

Oba Ewuare II described the development as an attempt to introduce the Iyaloja system—common in Yoruba land—into Benin’s market culture, calling it “alien” and “inimical” to Edo tradition.

“The Palace has observed that markets have become a tool in the hands of partisan politicians and unscrupulous individuals who exploit them for personal gain,” the statement read. “This misuse of associations has worsened food prices and undermined the President’s efforts to make food more affordable.”

Reaffirming the Benin Palace’s rejection of the Iyaloja title, the monarch emphasized that in Benin culture, the Iyeki (market head) is chosen by market women themselves and only confirmed by the Palace—not imposed or politically appointed.

“The Palace never chooses anybody as Iyeki,” the Oba clarified. “Each Iyeki is independent and spiritually tied to the Palace. There are no honorary Iyeki titles in Benin, just as there are no honorary chieftaincy titles.”

He also warned against politicizing the traditional role of market leaders, saying any deviation from the cultural process could lead to unrest.

“It behoves the Benin Traditional Council to advise the State Government to take note of this and avoid actions that may lead to a breakdown of peace,” he concluded.
