The National Union of Taraba State Students (NUTSS) has strongly condemned the alleged physical assault of a student by a security officer at Taraba State University.
In an official press statement signed by the union’s Vice President, Yusuf Yahaya Inuwa, the incident was described as unacceptable and a violation of students’ rights and dignity. A copy of the statement was also forwarded to the Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Atando Dauda Agbu.
The union emphasized that no student should be subjected to violence or humiliation under any circumstance. It noted that even in cases of alleged misconduct, established disciplinary procedures and due process must be strictly followed in accordance with the university’s rules and regulations.
According to NUTSS, security personnel are appointed to maintain order and ensure the safety of lives and property on campus, not to administer punishment. The union added that if lecturers are barred from physically assaulting students, security officers must equally uphold professionalism, exercise restraint, and treat students with respect.
The union called on the Dean of Student Affairs, the Head of Security, and the university management to urgently investigate the matter and take appropriate disciplinary action where necessary. It stressed that justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done.
While pursuing the issue through legal and institutional channels, NUTSS urged students to remain calm, law-abiding, and refrain from any acts of violence or retaliation that could escalate tensions.
The union reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the rights, dignity, and welfare of all students of Taraba State.
