NSCIA Announces Ramadan 1447 A.H., Condemns Islamophobia and Calls for Election Review

The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has announced that Muslims in Nigeria will begin the search for the crescent moon to mark the start of Ramadan 1447 A.H. on Tuesday, February 17, 2026. If the crescent is sighted, Ramadan will commence on Wednesday, February 18; otherwise, it will begin on Thursday, February 19.

In a statement, NSCIA Secretary-General, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, highlighted the challenges facing Muslims in the country, citing “heightened Islamophobic hysteria, insecurity, and perceived media bias against Muslims.” He criticised media outlets for failing to uphold principles of truth, fairness, and objectivity in matters concerning the Muslim community.

The Council also expressed concern over the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) decision to schedule elections during Ramadan, describing it as “not unexpected” and warning that it would be closely monitored. “We are watching very closely and expecting an immediate review,” the statement added.

NSCIA urged Muslims to remain steadfast in faith, quoting the Quran: “Inna ma’al ‘usri yusra” (“Verily, with hardship comes ease”) and “Allah intends ease for you, not hardship, so that you may complete the prescribed period and proclaim the greatness of Allah for guiding you, and perhaps you will be grateful.” (Q. Al-Baqarah 2:185)

The Council encouraged the faithful to use Ramadan as a period of reflection, repentance, and prayer for guidance and succour.
