Northern Elders to Tinubu: Declare National Emergency on Insecurity Now

ABUJA — The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has urged President Bola Tinubu to immediately declare a national emergency on insecurity, warning that the crisis in the North has now spread across the entire country.

The call was made on Thursday by Salisu Mohammed, Deputy Director-General of the Forum, during an interview on Prime Time, a programme aired on Arise Television.

Mohammed stressed that the current security situation has gone beyond the capacity of Nigeria’s security agencies, requiring urgent and drastic measures to restore safety and stability.

“The position of Northern Elders on the state of insecurity in the North, and indeed the whole country, is that Mr President should declare a national emergency, not just in the North,” Mohammed said.

He added: “Insecurity in the North has now metastasized into insecurity in Nigeria. The best way to tackle it is through a declaration of national emergency that requires more drastic handling.”

According to him, such a move must go beyond deploying the military and police, insisting that it calls for a comprehensive, all-society approach.

“This will require the engagement of citizens, not just the Armed Forces, police, and security apparatus, because the security architecture of the country has been overwhelmed,” he warned.
