The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, has dismissed claims that he deliberately ignored the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, during a recent public event in Ibadan, describing the viral “handshake snub” video as a misunderstanding blown out of proportion by social media.
Addressing journalists on Wednesday, the monarch said the incident was neither intentional nor disrespectful, insisting that his conduct at the event was guided strictly by protocol and timing rather than personal sentiments.
“There was no intention whatsoever. What happened was not deliberate. Social media has simply twisted the situation,” Oba Ladoja said.
He explained that he arrived at the venue slightly late and chose to take his seat quietly so as not to disrupt the programme.
“When you arrive late at a mosque, you don’t start walking around greeting people while prayers are ongoing. You wait and join properly. That was exactly what I was trying to do,” the Olubadan stated.
According to him, the seating arrangement also limited movement, as his seat was positioned between the Soun of Ogbomosoland and the Alaafin of Oyo.
“My seat was sandwiched between the Soun and the Alaafin. I had to pass through people. I didn’t decide to avoid or ignore anyone. Why would I?” he asked.
Oba Ladoja further noted that a longer version of the video circulating online clearly shows him exchanging greetings with other dignitaries at the event, including the state governor.
“If you watch the complete video, you’ll see me greeting people. But social media only picked what suited a certain narrative,” he said.
On whether he had reached out privately to address the issue, the Olubadan maintained that he did not consider the incident offensive.
“I don’t think anyone was offended, and I don’t see it as an insult to anybody,” he added.
He concluded by stressing the need for unity among traditional rulers, urging a shift in focus toward issues that promote development.
“My focus is unity for this generation and the next. We must raise standards, especially in education, and concentrate on what truly drives progress,” the monarch said.
